A major component of the ICD event in Perth was acknowledging Dr John Owen AM for his ten years of service on the Section VIII Board as he has completed his term as Immediate Past President and departs the Board. Following the induction of new Fellows in Perth, John was presented with a Section VIII Past President’s pin by President Richard Sawers AM and was also awarded Honorary Life Membership by the Board.
Past International President and Section VIII International Councillor, Dr Clive Ross CNZM, of New Zealand delivered a video address entitled “Reflections on 100 Years for ICD”. Clive outlined the early history of the College and highlighted the contributions of WA Fellows to the development and leadership of Section VIII. He emphasised the meaning of ICD Fellowship and encouraged the new Fellows to contribute to the future of the College by “building on the shoulders of those who came before”. Robert JF Butler
Robert J F Butler had a long and influential dental career that spanned military service, public service and corporate service. After retiring from the Australian Navy Dental Corps, Rob became the inaugural Deputy Director at the newly opened Westmead Centre Dental Clinical School in 1980 and progressed to the position of Director in 1990. In December 1993, Rob left Westmead to become Executive Director of the ADA, a position he held for ten years until his retirement in July 2003.
Naturally, with such breadth and longevity in dentistry in Australia, Rob is fondly remembered by many whose careers he supported and influenced through the years, as exemplified by tributes received from ICD Fellows. From Ian Meyers OAM, “His immense contributions, influence and impact on the profession over many years cannot be understated. Rob was a great advisor and mentor to many, including myself, and I was very fortunate to benefit on many occasions from his wisdom and guidance. His passing is very sad news.”
From Dr David Sheen, “I owe lots to Rob. When doing my two years as “researcher” at the Westmead Dental Clinical School, 1983-1985, Rob was very supportive of my work and the person I could always bounce ideas off. So sensible, friendly and encouraging. When he became aware that I wanted to set up a program of support for The Eritrean Dental Program, he put me in touch with Colin Wall, then CEO of the ADA, such that the ADA became the project manager. This allowed me to access funding from AusAID and have the ADA Treasurer manage the program funds. Without that support, the Eritrean program would not have been as successful as it was. I shall remember Rob with great fondness. A great contributor to our profession in so many ways.”
From Ron and Jackie Robinson, “We owe a great deal to Rob. Although Keith Lester brought us to Australia, it was Rob who influenced our career pathways the most. Rob was Deputy Director at Westmead when we joined the staff in October 1981. It was Rob who created the position of “Student Patient Coordinator” that Jackie initially filled and later Rob appointed Jackie as Deputy Director. When Ron left Westmead in 2001, Rob employed him as a contractor to develop the first website for the ADA. He subsequently appointed Ron as the first IT Manager for the ADA. We are deeply indebted to Rob. We valued his support throughout our careers and his friendship in later years.”
Rob was respected by those who worked with him at the highest levels of organised dentistry. From Clive Ross CNZM, “Rob was an exceptional leader in his own right - steady, considered, understanding , fair and sound in his judgment and he contributed hugely to every organization he was involved in. We have all lost a very dear friend and colleague.”
Rob was made an Honorary Life Member of Section VIII in 2014 during Section VIII’s 50th anniversary induction ceremony in Sydney.
